Character Counter for Instagram Captions
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters long — but without a tap, the feed only shows roughly the first 125. This counter checks your caption budget live in an Instagram preview, emojis and hashtags included.
Runs entirely in your browser — your text never leaves your device. No upload, no tracking.

Open in PostPublifyInstagram limits & guidelines at a glance
- Caption limit: 2,200 characters — emojis count once, hashtags count too.
- Feed truncation: after ~125 characters Instagram shows “more” (guideline) — the core message belongs in the first line.
- Hashtags: maximum 30, guideline 3–8 targeted ones instead of hashtag walls (industry benchmark).
- Links in captions are not clickable — the clickable link belongs in your bio or story.
Frequently asked questions
- How many characters does an Instagram caption allow?
- Up to 2,200 characters per caption — hashtags and emojis count too. Anything beyond that simply cannot be saved; trim the text or move details into the comments.
- Where does Instagram truncate the caption in the feed?
- The feed shows only about the first 125 characters before the “more” link appears (a device-dependent guideline). The first line has to spark curiosity — put your core message and call-to-action up front.
- How many hashtags are allowed per Instagram post?
- A maximum of 30 hashtags per post (caption and comments combined). As a guideline, 3–8 targeted hashtags have become the norm — sheer volume no longer brings a measurable advantage (industry benchmark).
- Do emojis count double in Instagram captions?
- No. Instagram counts characters unweighted — an emoji counts as one character, links at their full length (though they are not clickable in captions). This counter counts plain Unicode characters accordingly.
