Character Counter for X (Twitter)

X allows 280 characters per post — but X counts differently from your text editor: every link is weighted at a fixed 23 characters, and most emojis and CJK characters count double. This counter uses the real X weighting and shows you a live preview of your post.

Runs entirely in your browser — your text never leaves your device. No upload, no tracking.

X limits & guidelines at a glance

  • Post limit: 280 weighted characters (standard account) — links = 23, most emojis = 2.
  • Engagement guideline: 70–100 visible characters are considered the sweet spot for interaction (industry benchmark, not an official X figure).
  • Up to 4 images per post — media has not cost characters since 2016.
  • Threads over truncation: if you regularly hit the limit, numbered threads (1/x) usually beat abbreviation acrobatics.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters does X allow per post?
Standard accounts get 280 weighted characters. Paying Premium users can write much longer posts — but long posts are collapsed in the timeline, so 280 remains the practical target for reach.
How does X count links and emojis?
Every URL is weighted at a fixed 23 characters via the t.co shortener — no matter how long the link really is. Most emojis and CJK characters (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) count as 2 characters. This counter reproduces exactly that weighting.
Do hashtags and mentions count towards the X limit?
Yes. Hashtags, @-mentions and punctuation all count fully towards the 280-character budget. Only attached images, videos and polls no longer cost characters.
What happens if my post exceeds 280 characters?
X blocks publishing — the post simply cannot be sent. Shorten the text or split it into a thread. The counter instantly shows you how many characters you are over.
